Attention
Importers, brokers and competent authorities in countries that either import the following foods or export them to Australia – dates, melons, enoki mushrooms, pufferfish and kava.
Purpose
To notify stakeholders of the new food safety requirements proposed for imported dates, melons, enoki mushrooms, pufferfish and kava.
Key points
- Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has published risk advice for imported dates, melons, enoki mushrooms and pufferfish. The advice has identified hazards which present a potential risk to public health.
- In response, we will classify these foods as ‘risk foods’ and are proposing new risk management measures for their import. This will provide assurance of their safety.
- Changes are also being proposed to existing requirements for kava.
- We are consulting on the proposed food safety measures. These are:
- food safety management certification of dates and melons
- analytical testing for enoki mushrooms
- foreign government certification of pufferfish
- inspection of kava from New Zealand.
- Your feedback will help inform the final risk management measures and implementation of the proposed changes.
Instructions
We invite you to review the consultation paper and provide feedback via our ‘Have Your Say ’ platform by 5pm (AEST) 6 December 2024.
