Food type
This includes all other food and beverages not separately listed within our Import requirements by food type.
Before importing food intended for sale, check:
- it is not listed as a prohibited food in Standard 1.1.1-10(5) of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code), including:
- prohibited plants and fungi - listed in Schedule 23 of the Code
- it is not prohibited under the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulation 1956, for example mini jelly cups that contain konjac as an ingredient
- if it is kava - that it is kava permitted by Standard 2.6.3 of the Code.
- it does not require a pre-market food safety clearance because it is:

Inspection and testing
This food is classified as a surveillance food.
We refer consignments for inspection to conduct a visual and label assessment at the rate of 5%.
If referred for inspection, the following applies:
- Visual inspection to determine if there are any signs of damage, deterioration, infestation or contamination of the food rendering it unfit for human consumption.
- Labelling inspection to assess compliance with:
- the standards in Chapters 1 and 2 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code
- country of origin food labelling requirements.
Note: No analytical tests apply to this food.
Once food has cleared biosecurity control, the importer is permitted to correct non-compliant food labelling prior to booking an IFIS inspection. Food pending an IFIS inspection cannot be sold or distributed.
