Purpose
To advise all stakeholders that the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has commenced public consultation on Have Your Say for the 2023 update of the Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL).
Key points
- Consultation is now open for the 2023 ASEL update.
- Consultation commenced today (26 June 2023) and will be open for a period of four weeks, concluding on 21 July 2023.
- To provide feedback on the matters under consideration in the 2023 ASEL update, please visit Have Your Say.
- All feedback received through public consultation will be considered in finalising the updated ASEL (Version 3.3), which the department plans to publish and implement in November 2023.
- Feedback is also welcome (now or at any time) on other matters relating to the ASEL. This feedback should be sent to ASELreview@aff.gov.au. Emerging or more complex topics will be added to a register and considered in future updates.
Background
- The 2023 ASEL update addresses matters raised by stakeholders relating to the export of livestock by sea and by air.
- The 2023 update will also propose changes to maintain or improve animal health and welfare outcomes, reduce ambiguity, and improve clarity and usability.
- The matters under consideration in the 2023 ASEL update are:
- Management of livestock in Registered Establishments
- The number of clear days livestock spend at a Registered Establishment
- Livestock marking and isolation practices in a Registered Establishment
- Record keeping requirements for Registered Establishments.
- Live exports by Sea
- When an accredited veterinarian (AAV) or stockperson must accompany a voyage
- The definition of near and far markets
- The requirement for contingency plans for escaped livestock
- Penning requirements for horned cattle and horned sheep
- Clarifying livestock identification requirements in laboratory test reports
- Reserve fodder requirements
- The rejection criteria table.
- Live exports by Air
- Competent stock handler on aircraft
- Pregnancy testing and penning requirements for the export of juvenile alpaca
