A $139.7 million transition assistance package for the phase out of live sheep exports by sea provides individuals, communities and businesses with the opportunity to be resilient, well positioned and ready when the trade ends in 2028.

The government transition plan for the phase out of live sheep exports by sea is based on independent advice and includes an overview of the commitment, advice, time, assistance and oversights of the transition.
Transition plan implementation approach
The transition plan implementation approach outlines the funding package and 10 program delivery areas that will progress the phasing out of live sheep exports by sea for 1 May 2028.

Past opportunities
Applications closed on 19 December 2024. Eligible peak industry bodies, Rural Research and Development Corporations, research providers and/or consultants specialising in fields such as agriculture, economics, markets or trade were invited to apply for grants totalling up to $2 million GST exclusive.
The department received a number of applications, which are now being processed.
The Enhancing Market Demand Grants Program is part of the transition assistance package available to explore opportunities that maintain and develop:
- interstate and overseas markets for Australian sheep products
- markets for Australian agri-food in the Middle East and North Africa region.
