Australia’s bovine genetics trade with Canada, New Zealand and the United States is important for our cattle industry.
To make trade easier between the four countries, Australia recently participated in a joint project aimed at gaining a better understanding of each country’s bovine genetic export systems.
In 2014, official veterinarians from each country visited the other countries to see first-hand how each system operates in practice. This presented a unique opportunity to assess how each country’s export system aligned with the other three countries and with the OIE’s international standard for trade in germplasm.
The project found that all four countries have very good systems in place, and although quite different, the systems are equivalent in managing biosecurity risk.
The joint project report is now available.
