Also known as pen-side tests, point-of-care (POC) tests are usually carried out in the field, or away from a central laboratory. This type of testing is useful for the early detection of pests and diseases by producing quick preliminary diagnostic results in a simple user-friendly way. An example of this type of test is the SARS-CoV-2 rapid antigen tests for humans. The links below apply to testing for notifiable/reportable animal diseases.
Use of POC tests for notifiable/reportable animal disease
The use of any veterinary tests including POC tests for official purposes (e.g. testing and diagnosis of reportable or notifiable animal diseases) is currently regulated by each Australian state or territory, which each have their own legislation regarding diagnostic tests approved for specific animal diseases. For specific requirements and approval, please refer to the respective state or territory authority.

Validation of POC tests for notifiable/reportable animal disease
The analytical accuracy of POC tests must be properly validated to ensure their fitness for purpose in Australia, including required disease reporting systems or decisions. POC test validation data should include clear instructions on the characteristics and applications of these tests for the user and interpretation of test results.
The national policy and guidance around use of POC tests for animal health purposes is in development in Australia through the Animal Health Committee.
Importation of POC tests
Imported test kits need a biosecurity import permit and applications must meet certain conditions, as they may contain biological materials harmful to Australian animals, humans or the environment. Anyone intending to import a diagnostic test kit for animal health purposes should also check they have the required permissions from their state or territory CVO or the relevant government authority.
