16 October 2015
The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (the department) today released the draft Biosecurity Import Risk Analysis guidelines 2015 (BIRA guidelines). Interested stakeholders are invited to comment on these BIRA guidelines through a submission process. This is part of the current consultation on the exposure draft Biosecurity (Biosecurity Import Risk Analyses) Regulation (BIRA Regulation) 2015.
Following the release of the draft BIRA guidelines, the submission period for the exposure draft BIRA Regulation 2015 has now been extended to 16 December 2015.
The BIRA guidelines are an administrative document which provide further information on the regulated BIRA process, and matters to be taken into account when conducting a BIRA under both the Biosecurity Act 2015 and the Biosecurity (Biosecurity Import Risk Analyses) Regulation 2015 (BIRA Regulation).
The BIRA guidelines include more of the information requested and feedback provided from the examination of the Import Risk Analysis process (IRA examination).
The department welcomes comments on the draft BIRA guidelines and exposure draft BIRA Regulation through the submission process. By providing your views you will help to ensure that the new BIRA processes and policies continue to meet Australia's appropriate level of protection, as well as our international rights and obligations.
