We invite you to comment on the draft report by 17 June 2024. The second draft report is available for review and comment on our Have Your Say website haveyoursay.agriculture.gov.au.
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has conducted a review of the biosecurity risks associated with importing dairy products for human consumption from all countries.
The department received a number of submissions on the first draft report of the Import risk review for dairy products for human consumption (2023-A02). In addition, the department has received a scientific report on the inactivation of lumpy skin disease virus following high-temperature short-time pasteurisation. In consideration of these submissions and new available research, the department has made changes to the review, some of which are significant.
The department is now releasing a second draft report for consultation for these changes to be considered by stakeholders. The second draft report is now available for stakeholder comment on our Have Your Say page.
The following areas have been amended in the second draft report:
- Chapter 3.1: Foot-and-mouth disease risk review
- Chapter 3.4: Sheeppox virus and goatpox virus risk review
- Chapter 4.1: Minimum requirements
- Chapter 4.2 Disease agent-specific animal biosecurity measures (removal of lumpy skin disease virus section)
- Appendix A: Disease agents managed by minimum requirements (addition of lumpy skin disease virus)
This review aims to modernise Australia’s dairy import conditions to reflect the current and future trading environment. It considers the biosecurity risks associated with importing (from any country) dairy products for human consumption manufactured from milk obtained from domestic cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goats. It takes into account new and relevant peer-reviewed scientific information, international standards, relevant changes in industry practices and operational practicalities.
The department invites comments on the second draft report, in particular the key changes that have been made from the first draft report. All submissions received on the draft reports will be carefully considered by Animal Biosecurity in finalising this review.
Submissions should be received by 17 June 2024 through the Have Your Say page.
