The draft report is available for review and comment on our Have Your Say website.
In response to Japanese encephalitis virus being detected on the Australian mainland in 2022, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has conducted a policy review of the risk of Japanese encephalitis in horses imported from approved countries.
The draft report recommends removing the current import conditions relevant to Japanese encephalitis virus for horses. This approach ensures the continuity of trade while managing the biosecurity risks to a level consistent with Australia’s appropriate level of protection.
The department invites comments on the draft review by Monday 21 August 2023. The draft review report is now available on our website .
