Ehrlichia canis has been detected in Australia and is now considered to be established. Further information about ehrlichiosis in dogs and the animal health situation in Australia can be found on the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s website.
Because of this, the department has reviewed the import conditions for dogs from approved countries. Consistent with Australia’s international trading obligations, the department is removing the requirement for dogs to test negative for E. canis prior to importation into Australia.
The changes to import conditions will take effect from 1 November 2022. Affected import permits will be varied, and the permit holders will be notified of the changes directly.
