The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has commenced a review for the importation of household pet and non-commercial psittacine birds into Australia. This is in response to numerous requests from pet psittacine bird owners and hobbyists.
Conditions for the importation of psittacine birds from all countries were suspended in 1995, conditions for the importation of pet birds from New Zealand remain in force.
Therefore, the Importation of psittacine birds (Household pet and non-commercial) – Draft Review will be progressed as a review of suspended and existing conditions.
The next step is to prepare and issue a draft report to provide stakeholders the opportunity to comment on the analysis. A Biosecurity Advice will be issued to announce that the draft report has been placed on the department’s website and to invite comments. Following the consultation period, the department will consider all comments in preparing a final report.
