Actions taken by a delegate of the secretary with respect to reportable mortality incidents

A reportable level of 1.19% occurred for a consignment on this voyage. The reportable mortality rate for long haul cattle is 1%. The department’s investigation into the cause of this mortality event is complete and its report is available on the department’s website. As a result of the investigation the department applied the following conditions to future consignments:

• the next consignment to this market required an AAV to accompany the voyage and to report on the health and welfare outcomes for the livestock.
• all future consignment must include bedding (sawdust) on consignments of cattle from Brisbane to Japan
• the continued requirement to vaccinate against Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) and Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis Virus (IBR) for all future consignments.

*This voyage carried two consignments, one to Indonesia and one to Thailand. The reportable mortality incident occurred in the smaller consignment to Thailand. The mortality rate for the entire voyage was 0.88%.

A reportable level of 3.37% occurred for a consignment on this voyage. The department is investigating the cause of this mortality event and when complete the investigation report will be available on the department’s website. To date the department has written to the exporter seeking information on the cause of the incident, and an explanation of the procedures the exporter has put in place to avoid a repeat of this incident.
