For exports of bivalve molluscs which are intended to be consumed raw, the Department of Agriculture has been advised by Japan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHLW) that, where the exporter address differs from the processing establishment address, the exporter must also be approved by Japan. This is in addition to the requirement for all bivalve molluscs exported to Japan to be sourced from processing establishments approved for this market
Until further notice, and pending negotiations with MHLW, shipments of molluscan shellfish which are intended to be consumed raw will only be accepted by Japan providing the exporter and processing establishment are approved by Japan.
Establishments are reminded that shipments of products which are not intended to be consumed raw must be labelled accordingly.
Updates will be provided to industry as they become available.
