During 2010, the Biosecurity Emergency Preparedness Working Group (BEPWG) and the National Biosecurity Committee (NBC) endorsed a common set of mapping symbology for use during the response to biosecurity incidents.
This symbology set is consistent with the ‘All Hazards National Symbology Set’ and other hazard specific symbology developed under the Australasian All-Hazards Symbology Set project, sponsored by the Intergovernmental Committee of Surveying and Mapping (ICSM) and Supported by Australian New Zealand Land Information Council (ANZLIC) and Emergency Management Spatial Information Network of Australia (EMSINA).
Consistent with the All Hazards National Symbology Set, the symbols developed for use in biosecurity incidents are grouped into three categories, with the shape of the symbol conveying a meaning, as follows:
- Incidents are represented by a diamond shape
- Operations or operational activity is represented by a circle
- Assets or infrastructure are represented by a rectangle shape
