The threat of exotic environmental pests entering and establishing in Australia is constant. We are always looking for ways to innovate and build capability to help us improve environmental biosecurity. This ensures our system is underpinned by the best available science.
Our approach
Innovation doesn’t just mean adopting new technology. It can also mean new tools, methods and applications that equip us with new ways to address the threat of invasive pests. Using data and analytics, we can identify and target where we need to innovate. Then, we partner with organisations and individuals to help improve the biosecurity system.
Programs that support innovation include:
- The Carp Biological Control Program
- Supporting Communities Manage Pest Animals and Weeds
- Established Pest Animals and Weeds Pipeline Program
Partnering with researchers
We are always open to approaches from researchers who have innovative ideas. We undertake some of the research we require in house or with the Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource, Economic and Sciences (ABARES). We also draw on specialist skills of research organisations including
- Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation
- Centre for Invasive Species Solutions
- Centre of Excellence for Biosecurity Risk Analysis.
Through the Environmental Biosecurity Project Fund we invest in projects that help us prevent, prepare, detect, identify, and respond to exotic environmental pests. The fund is open to individuals and organisations.
