We supported the development of a new national established weed framework.
The NEWP will guide future collaboration to manage established weeds in Australia.
NEWP aims to add new weeds to the Weeds of National Significance list.
It will also focus on weed issues beyond a specific species.
In June 2023, the Environment and Invasives Committee endorsed the NEWP Framework and Implementation Plan.
In November 2023, the National Biosecurity Committee agreed to an initial phase of implementation for NEWP.
Initial focus is on determination of new national weed priorities.
Once priorities are determined, government and non-government stakeholders will consider investment. This will determine the scale of NEWP implementation.
Expressions of interest (EOIs) for nationally significant weeds closed on 20 September 2024.
Organisations were advised about the outcome of the EOI process in October 2024.
If your EOI met the eligibility criteria, you have been invited to submit a nomination for the weed.
Nominations are open now and will close AEDT 9:00pm 12 January 2025. Nominations must be submitted using the Nomination form template.
A guide has been developed to assist organisations nominating a nationally significant weed.
For further information, including current status and full list of weeds found eligible to proceed to Nomination, or to download a Nomination form, please visit Weeds Australia.
Natural resource management consultant, Wild Matters Pty Ltd, developed the framework. An Advisory Group provided input and guidance during the process.
