The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment is working with the National Farmers Federation to build awareness of government initiatives and programs which support climate resilience for farmers and land managers.
Australia is the driest inhabited continent on Earth. An unenviable title but it means Australian farmers understand the importance of sustainable land management and have become world leaders in adapting to a variable climate.
Climate change is presenting new challenges. Australia is already experiencing the impacts of climate change, particularly changes associated with increases in temperature, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, changing fire weather and shifting rainfall patterns.
In response many agricultural industry groups and companies have set targets and taking steps to reduce emissions and increase resilience to maintain productivity. The government recognises this excellent work and is supporting the sector in its efforts to build resilience, adapt and manage its emissions.
Australian Government support isn’t just focused on responding to the challenges of climate change but looking at the opportunities. Climate adaptation and mitigation action unlocks economic opportunities across Australia’s built, social, economic and natural environments.
Supporting on farm climate resilience is part of the Australian Government’s aim of setting the right foundations for Australia’s world-class farmers, fishers and foresters to rebound from COVID-19 and build toward the agricultural sectors’ vision for a $100 billion industry by 2030.
The first webinar, Agriculture and Climate Resilience, took place on Thursday 26 August. Topics presented at the webinar included:
