Who does this notice affect?
This notice is to inform the prawn import industry regarding approved laboratories available to test for viruses in imported raw frozen prawns.
What has changed?
The department approved a new laboratory on 5 May 2016 (Import Industry Advice Notice 27/2016). This notice is to provide the prawn import industry with the information on all approved laboratories available to test for viruses in imported raw frozen prawns (with the head and shell removed, but not highly processed) to meet Australia’s biosecurity import conditions.

As per the existing policy, the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) is available only for re-testing samples that have been tested positive by screening laboratories (confirmatory testing). Importers may request a confirmatory testing and all costs are borne by importers. No laboratories other than AAHL may carry out confirmatory testing.
