Purpose
The purpose of this Industry Advice Notice (IAN) is to remind industry of the requirements for the use of container seals as advised in IAN 2016/38.
Summary of key points
- For the export of citrus, table grapes, apples and mangoes to Japan, the container seals required are those provided and endorsed by the department.
- Container seals for citrus, table grape, apple and mango exports to Japan must be ordered by export registered establishments through the department.
- Older versions of seals, such as those marked “DAFFA” or “DAFF”, must not be used.
- Container seals required for other protocol markets must be sourced independently by export registered establishments.

Background
Export protocols and work plans outline a number of requirements to ensure the security and integrity of exported plants and plant products, including the placement of container seals on containers.
Japan has strict requirements regarding seals for sealing consignments of citrus, table grapes, apples and mangoes.
For exports to other protocol markets, a variety of containers seals are required, which are not regulated or endorsed by the department.
