Grains and Plant Products Industry Advice Notice no. G2009/01
12 January 2009
Protocol to manage failed mandatory fumigation of bulk grain
This Grain and Plant Products Industry Advice Notice (IAN) is to notify industry of an interim strategy to manage live insect detections in inspected samples following mandatory fumigation treatment. This IAN has been developed further to IAN 2006/37 in response to a recent incident involving mandatory pre-shipment fumigation of Grains and Plant Products.
When a live insect is detected in mandatory fumigated prescribed goods, the exporter has a number of options available to manage the consignment.
These are:
- Discharge failed grain from the vessel and re-inspect after the grain has been re-fumigated.
- Divert the shipment to another importing country that does not require mandatory fumigation.
- Treat the grain in-hold using:
- probes to distribute the fumigant into the grain
- effective immersion of probes into grain
- sensors placed below and away from probes to monitor that fumigant has dispersed and
- AQIS sampling to verify efficacy of treatment.
Should the third option be chosen, exporters should contact the AQIS Regional Office for further details about the interim protocol for mandatory fumigation failures.
AQIS will review the interim protocol in consultation with scientific experts and industry.
