Date of Effect: 10 December 2012
Establishments that export or supply food or beverage products to the United States (US) are required to register with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These establishments must update their registration before the end of December 2012, and further updates will be required in 2014.
Information on registration is available on the U.S Department of Health and Human Services website as well as step-by-step instructions on how to complete the registration form.
The regulation (21 CFR 170.3) that mandates types of food to be subject to FDA registration is inclusive and defines food as human food, substances migrating to food from food-contact articles, pet food, and animal feed. Registration of food establishments must use the food categories classified under the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act 2002 (the Bioterrorism Act).
