Who does this notice affect?
This notice affects importers of fresh horticulture produce and brokers.
What has changed?
Import conditions are now published on BICON for the importation of fresh chilli fruit from Fiji (except the Island of Rotuma). Three (3) varieties of chilli fruit from Fiji are permitted to be imported into Australia – bird’s eye, hot rod and red fire.
The import conditions are based on the standard commercial production practices and packing procedures outlined in the Final Report for the review of biosecurity import requirements for fresh Capsicum spp. fruit from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu.
Fresh chilli fruit from Fiji must be harvested and imported at a specific maturity stage to manage quarantine fruit flies and achieve the appropriate level of protection for Australia.
Further information
A valid permit is required to import fresh chilli fruit from Fiji.
A valid import permit must be issued by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (the department) before the fruit is shipped to Australia.
An import permit may be obtained by submitting an import permit application to the department through BICON (use the 'Apply Now' button at the bottom of the BICON case).
