28/06/2019
Who does this notice affect?
This notice is of interest to importers of salmon and salmonid products, as well as associated industry participants and retailers.
What has changed?
New Import conditions for salmon have been finalised and are available in Biosecurity Advice 2019-A04.
All salmon products imported into Australia on or after 1 September 2019 must comply with the new import conditions:
Imported salmon that is not in consumer ready form, or has not received an approved heat treatment, will be directed for processing to an Approved Arrangement (AA) class 3.4 imported salmonid product processing.
Salmon will only be released from biosecurity control once it has been processed into consumer ready form as defined in Biosecurity Advice 2019-A04.
Salmon consignments must be accompanied by updated health certification
Any product imported after 1 September 2019 must comply with the new conditions. Non-compliant product must be re-exported or destroyed.
The new post-entry processing requirements are necessary for the effective management of high risk waste material that is generated when imported salmonids are further processed in Australia.
The department is currently liaising with trading partners to change health certification for salmon and salmonid products. Further updates will be provided on the progress with individual trading partners.
The department will contact individual importers shortly to provide advice about changes to their import permits.

Further information on these changes can be found at Biosecurity Advice 2019-A04.
