Purpose
This Industry Advice Notice (IAN) is to advise of changes to requirements for the export of citrus to New Zealand.
Summary of changes and key points
- Market access for limes to New Zealand has been changed. Tahitian limes (Citrus latifolia) have now been approved for export to New Zealand and have replaced previous market access for Mexican limes (Citrus aurantiifolia).
- Irradiation treatment has been approved as a measure for fruit flies.
- The following pests are now listed as pests of concern:
- Bactrocera frauenfeldi
- Bactrocera kraussi
- Orchid thrips (Chaetanaphothrips orchidii)
- Spherical mealybug (Nipaecoccus viridis)
- Pacific mealybug (Planococcus minor)
- Yellow tea thrips (Scirtothrips dorsalis)
- Kanzawa spider mite (Tetranychus kanzawai)
- Cold treatment rates for the treatment of fruit flies have been updated.
- New Zealand has recognised the citrus production areas of Sunraysia, Riverina, Narromine, Bourke, the state of Victoria and the state of South Australia as being free of tropical fruit flies. Citrus sourced from these regions may be exported under the Queensland fruit fly (Bactrocera tryoni) treatment schedule.
- The phytosanitary requirements for the export of citrus from Australia to New Zealand have been updated in the New Zealand Export Plan and in the Manual of Importing Country Requirements (Micor).
Background
In 2021, New Zealand conducted a review of the Import Health Standards (IHS) and treatment schedules for citrus from Australia. The review resulted in a revision of the New Zealand Export Plan including the requirements for Australian citrus exports.
Exporter responsibilities
It is the responsibility of the exporter to meet the requirements of the New Zealand Export Plan. The Export Plan is available in the ‘Documents' section in Micor. To access these documents, you must be a registered Micor Plants user.
