Australian waters are home to a diverse and unique array of sharks, rays and related species, which are an important part of our aquatic biodiversity and Australian governments are committed to the conservation and management of sharks and their long-term sustainable use. Australia’s second National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks 2012 (hereafter referred to as Shark-plan 2) will play a key role in achieving these goals. Shark-plan 2 builds on the lessons learned from Australia’s 2004 National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks recognising its achievements and also identifying areas where improvements are still needed.​
