HACCUT undertook two rounds of public consultation in April and November 2018 on the proposal: The National Harmonisation of Minimum Veterinary Prescribing and Compounding Regulatory Requirements for Veterinary Practitioners – Treatment of Livestock. HACCUT has considered all submissions and will present a draft proposal to the Agriculture Senior Officials Committee for endorsement by early 2021.
Background
The VPCR working group is responsible for developing a proposal for a harmonised system that will allow veterinarians to exercise professional judgement to administer veterinary medicines in an off-label manner, where appropriate, to treat animals in their care. The proposal seeks to manage risks to trade, public health and the environment while enabling the protection of animal health and welfare.
The draft proposal contains provisions for veterinarians to continue to:
- compound and supply veterinary products subject to certain conditions
- prescribe off-label uses for prescription and non-prescription products
- use or prescribe unregistered products for food producing species in limited circumstances.
