Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Livestock at Processing Facilities and Establishments
AWTG 03-23 noted an update from Queensland that drafting of the new standards and guidelines continues. An informal initial consultation phase with targeted stakeholders on the drafting is being planned, after which the drafting will be subject to public consultation impact assessment.
Suitability of horses under existing Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Land Transport of Livestock
AWTG 03-23 noted an update from Queensland that all feedback from the consultation regulatory impact statement in October 2022 has been reviewed. The development of a decision regulatory impact statement and revised draft standards and guidelines is near complete.
Renewed Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS)
The federal budget in May handed down a commitment of $5 million over 4 years to renew the AAWS. The AWTG will play a key role in the development of the renewed strategy.
Options for the Development of National Standards and Guidelines for Animal Welfare
Agriculture Ministers via the Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) tasked the Agriculture Senior Officials’ Committee (AGSOC) with considering options for improving the current process for developing nationally consistent animal welfare standards and guidelines. That work has recently commenced and will be progressed to AGSOC initially.
