The National Management Group (NMG) met on 14 May 2024 and approved the revised budget for the red witchweed (Striga asiatica) Response Plan 2022 – 2025 (originally endorsed on 13 December 2023).
The NMG agreed red witchweed remains technically feasible and cost-beneficial to eradicate from Australia and Response Plan 2022 – 2025 remains fit-for-purpose.
The total cost share budget for Response Plan 2022 – 2025 is $3.8 million.
The National Red Witchweed Eradication Response Program is a deed-like response cost shared between affected government and industry parties since 2015.
Red witchweed was first detected in July 2013 in Mackay, Queensland. On 4 June 2015, the NMG endorsed a 10-year eradication program to 2025. For further information on red witchweed, please visit the Outbreak website.
If you think you have seen red witchweed, report it to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.
