The National Management Group (NMG) met on 26 November 2024 and approved a new four-year Response Plan for the National Tropical Weeds Eradication Program (The Program). The Response Plan 2024-2028 represents the next phase of the long-term commitment from governments in eradicating these weeds from Australia.
The Program currently targets five weeds: Limnocharis flava; Miconia calvescens; Miconia nervosa; Miconia racemosa; and Mikania micrantha. Eradication of these weeds is considered nationally significant due to their potential impact on business, ecosystem services and environmental amenities (including the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area).
Following the discovery of the weeds in Queensland in 2003, a nationally cost-shared eradication program was implemented. The Program continues to meet the defined eradication objectives, and the Response Plan 2024-2028 reflects minor tactical and governance recommendations from a 2024 independent review. More information on response activities is available on www.daf.qld.gov.au.
If you suspect you have the target weed species on your property, please contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 or report via the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881. You can find out more about how we respond to plant pest and disease incidents at outbreak.gov.au.
