A veterinary officer from the department’s Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer has been seconded to work with the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Subregional Office for the Pacific Islands in Apia, Samoa.
This secondment builds on the Australian government’s efforts to support the health of animals and people in the Pacific region. We are also providing support to Indonesia in their response to the foot-and-mouth disease and lumpy skin disease outbreaks through the supply of vaccines and other technical assistance. Australia is actively seeking ways to work with our near neighbours to slow the spread of these diseases.
Secondments of our specialised animal health staff to global organisations, will strengthen international standards and policies relating to animal health, welfare, biosecurity, food safety and antimicrobial resistance.
