New strategy guides the department’s work in the Pacific

Australia’s first Pacific Biosecurity Strategy provides a roadmap for our future work in the Pacific region.

Our new strategy focuses on the department’s approach to improving plant, animal, and environmental health outcomes across the region.

The development of the Pacific Biosecurity Strategy demonstrates Australia’s commitment to building a stronger and more united Pacific family. It supports our increased engagement with our near neighbours and outlines how we will work collaboratively to reduce the threat from exotic pests and diseases. 

The strategy is centred around 4 themes.

1. Enhance biosecurity partnerships between Australia, PICTs and near neighbours in a multifaceted and holistic way to maintain existing and forge new mutually beneficial regional relationships.
2. Enhance PICTs’ and near neighbours’ participation to bring a regional voice to international multilateral biosecurity forums.
3. Collaboratively develop and enhance biosecurity capacity and capability of PICTs and near neighbours.
4. Enhance safe trade and market access opportunities of PICTs and near neighbours.

Agriculture is crucial for supporting food security and nutrition, as well sustaining economic growth.

With the implementation of this strategy, Australia is contributing to several United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs) including zero hunger and protecting life below water and on land.

This strategy defines our vision to work collectively with our Pacific family to build stronger biosecurity systems which will tangibly improve the lives of people across the region.
