Biosecurity activities manage the risk of pests and diseases that threaten Australia’s environment, agricultural industries and our way of life.
We undertake a range of regulatory activities and recover the associated costs. This ensures our biosecurity system remains robust, responsive to emerging risks and enables market access for Australian products.
In 2023 we completed a comprehensive review of the biosecurity cost recovery arrangement. It was the first comprehensive review since 2015. The outcome resulted in increased prices, a commitment to review regulatory charges annually, and legislative amendments to include indexation of prices across future years.
This approach will continue to align the cost to deliver regulatory activities with prices. It will also avoid large increases in the future and support ongoing sustainable funding of the biosecurity system.
In 2024, we will apply indexation and increase regulatory fees and charges for biosecurity and imported food regulatory activities by 4.1%. New prices will commence 1 July 2024.
