4 October 2024

The 2024 “Caring for Country Music Competition” has received 20 entries from Northern Territory musicians, with a focus on connecting people with biosecurity messaging in a fun, interactive and engaging way.

Residents of the Northern Territory were invited to enter the competition under the categories of school, group and individual, with all entries eligible for the most innovative and most creative awards.

A panel of judges with representatives from DAFF, NAPCaRN, MusicNT and NT DAF will assess the entries on the creativity, originality, lyrics, melody and alignment with biosecurity messaging and goals.

Members of the public are invited to participate in voting for the “People’s Choice Award”, open for two weeks from 7-25 October.

Winners for all categories will be announced in November.

Quotes attributable to Deputy Secretary, Justine Saunders:

“I’m so pleased to see so many great musicians have submitted entries for the Caring for Country Music Competition.

“Biosecurity is a shared responsibility, and is being showcased in a creative and fun way for Territorians, spreading the word through music about protecting our country from exotic pests and diseases.

“This is a fantastic way to raise necessary awareness, knowledge and understanding of potential biosecurity risks.”

Quotes attributable to Music NT Executive Director, Mark Smith:

"The Caring for Country Music Competition is a fantastic initiative that brings together the power of music and the crucial message of biosecurity. By participating, musicians not only get to showcase their talent but also contribute to the health and sustainability of our environment.

"We are absolutely thrilled to have received so many submissions from songwriters and musicians from every corner of the Northern Territory.

“Whether they are a solo artist or part of a group, this competition has been an amazing opportunity to learn, collaborate, and create a positive impact on our country's biosecurity through music and we can't wait to hear these songs on the radio— be sure to tune in and cast your vote for the People's Choice Award!"

Entries can be listened to, and votes submitted at https://envirosongcomp.musicnt.com.au.
