Facilitated by the Indigenous Ranger Biosecurity Program (IRBP), the Indigenous Rangers Biosecurity Round Table was held in Darwin from 12 – 13 June.
78 participants from different parts of northern Australia joined the event, including 46 Indigenous ranger coordinators and managers from partner Indigenous ranger organisations. Ranger groups partner with the department to help protect Australia’s agricultural industries and environment by conducting biosecurity activities through fee for service contract arrangements.
The Round Table was an opportunity for Indigenous ranger representatives to come together with our staff from the IRBP to hold strategic discussions to help shape a shared, collective vision for the program. Open discussion and 2-way consultation provided insights into how everyone can learn from their collective experience and rangers’ invaluable knowledge of Country to strengthen Australia’s biosecurity and protect Country.
Building on the success of the 2022 Round Table which helped inform our sustainable funding for the IRBP, the event is now an ongoing biennial initiative. This helps to ensure continuous co-design with Indigenous stakeholders, improvement of the program and Australia’s biosecurity.
