The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources provides policy input into a range of forums that influence or have a role in the management of Australia’s oceans. This includes input into proposed marine bioregional plans and marine reserves to ensure the interests of all stakeholders are carefully considered.
The Australian Government Department of the Environment leads the marine bioregional planning process.
Bioregional management plans were developed for all six bioregions, however only one management plan has been implemented to date - the South-East Commonwealth Marine Reserves Network.
Marine bioregional planning is currently being reviewed for the remaining five networks, South-west, North-west, North, Coral Sea, and Temperate East . The development of the bioregional plans and associated marine reserve networks for these bioregions will be an upcoming focus.
