Recreational boat survey

Complete our short online survey into how marine pests move around in Australian waters on boat hulls.
If you own a recreational yacht, cruiser or motor boat that is usually kept in marine waters, you are eligible to participate. Please complete a separate survey for each boat that you own or operate.

Start the survey now (approximately 20 minutes to complete)

You will find it easier to complete the survey if you have some knowledge of the use, cleaning and maintenance of the recreational boat. It will also help if you have information available about the trips you have made in your boat and your maintenance regime during the past 12 months.

Biofouling affects you

All boats can unintentionally carry harmful plants and animals to new locations on the hull, propellers, anchors, lines and fishing gear (called ‘biofouling’).

By participating, you will help us better understand common biofouling management practices and how marine pests are spread through Australian waters by recreational boats.

Increased fouling can reduce your boat’s fuel efficiency and speed, and increase maintenance costs.
The introduction and spread of new marine plants and animals can harm our nation’s fisheries, threaten our biodiversity and have widespread effects on our economy and health.

The survey is being conducted by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) for the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources.

About the survey

The data captured through the survey will help us understand and support Australia’s recreational boating sector in the ongoing self-management of biofouling. It will also help us better understand and reduce the risks of new pests and diseases spreading through Australia’s waters.

The survey is open to anyone over 18 years of age, with a strong knowledge about the use and maintenance of the recreational boat.
