Information management and public data

Our department is unique in the data we collect and the information we manage. As a policy developer, economic and scientific research adviser, regulator and programme and service provider, we use information every day to help drive a stronger Australian economy.

The Information Management and Public Data Taskforce has been established to review the department’s data assets and information management and public data practices. The taskforce will look at what data can be made more accessible while maintaining privacy and security requirements where appropriate. No personal and commercial information will be made public through this process.

The Government’s agenda

The data that is produced and held by the Australian Government is a national resource. It has the potential to help grow the economy, stimulate innovation, improve service delivery, create efficiencies across Government and transform policy outcomes for the nation.

Currently, data held and maintained by government agencies is not easily accessible by the public and other government agencies. By making data more accessible we are able to potentially increase the value of data by using it in ways not currently envisioned.

The Government recognises this and is committed to publishing, linking and sharing data where ever possible. This was reiterated with the release of the Australian Government policy on public data by the Prime Minister on 7 December 2015.

Next steps

The department is working toward implementing the Australian Government policy on public data and has begun to develop a framework to support more efficient publication of data. This processes established by the framework will ensure that data is appropriately managed and that non-sensitive data is up to date and readily accessible.
